Serengeti Migration
Serengeti Migration
Serengeti Migration also known as “Greatest Show on Earth,” presents an awe-inspiring display of raw nature, survival instincts, and the circle of life. The Serengeti migration cycle, a natural marvel, unfolds in a continuous and rhythmic pattern across the East African plains.
The migration Cycle.
Starting in January, the calving season marks the migration’s inception in the southern Serengeti. Wildebeests, accompanied by zebras and other herbivores, gather here as the abundant grass and water provide a haven for birthing. This period becomes a hunting ground for predators, who take advantage of vulnerable newborns.
As the rains arrive in April, signaling the onset of the wet season, the migration begins its northwest movement into the central Serengeti. The animals follow the rain patterns, seeking greener pastures and more plentiful water sources. By June, they reach the Grumeti River, undertaking daring river crossings while navigating the threats posed by lurking crocodiles.
July to September witnesses the migration’s advancement to the northern Serengeti and the Mara River, forming another crucial stage. Here, the animals face another perilous river crossing, battling strong currents and predators in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. This dramatic spectacle of survival and struggle captivates observers.
As the dry season approaches in October and November, the migration retraces its steps, embarking on the return journey towards the southern Serengeti. So, by covering vast distances, the herds migrate back to the nutrient-rich plains where the cycle began. December marks a resting period in the southern Serengeti as the animals prepare for the upcoming calving season, completing the cyclical journey.
This cyclic movement, driven by the quest for sustenance, breeding, and survival, epitomizes the Serengeti’s marvels. But also, the migration offers a breathtaking spectacle to tourists and wildlife enthusiasts who flock to witness this awe-inspiring event. This makes the migration a living testament to the unyielding spirit and resilience of nature’s inhabitants in their untamed wilderness.
The best experience during the Serengeti migration is the Hot air balloon safari. The balloon safari across the Serengeti plains taking the most majestic view from the great migration is a lifetime adventure.
