Selous Game Reserve

The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected game reserve on the African continent covering an area of 54,600 square kilometers comprised of a vast wilderness with forests, grassy plains, mountains and open woodlands. It was declared a World Heritage Site due to its dramatic landscapes and great diversity of wildlife. The Selous Game Reserve is off the beaten path, and only 1% of Tanzania’s tourists heading down to this part of the country. The beauty of the park is matched by the quality of a safaris such as game drives, boating, bird watching, walking and fly camping compliment standard thriving wildlife areas. It is a key landscape for endangered wild dog, which share the reserve with plenty of crocodile, black rhino, impala, leopard, hippo, zebra, elephant, lion, buffalo and more than 400 bird species.

One of the best sights within this game reserve is the Rufiji River, a gigantic river with a high density of crocodiles and hippos. Together with the Great Ruaha River, it creates a river delta, making for formidable game viewing and some of the most exciting boat safaris in East Africa. Selous Safari Holidays are highly recommended as in size this reserve is twice the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and three times Kruger National Park in South Africa. The Selous is a superb safari destination for both family safaris and African honeymoons, all the better for the ease of getting there and the lack of crowds. The park is so vast it is impossible to count its game and that is exactly what we love about it; Selous is untouched African wilderness and yet still easily accessible from Dar and Zanzibar.
