The Usambara Mountains is usually divided into two parts; the West Usambara Mountains and the smaller East Usambara Mountains separated by a 4 km wide valley. You reach the West Usambara Mountains which is most accessible from Lushoto and the East Usambara mountains from Amani. This mountain range was formed millions of years ago and has remained relatively undisturbed for most of that time, which has given rise the growth of old forest and other treasures.
It is one of the undiscovered places in Tanzania, a true paradise for nature and hiking lovers with amazing views. The Usambara Mountains contain an extensive, protected, lush and untouched tropical rainforest with a rich biodiversity and many endemic species like the African violet, the Usambara Eagl Owl, the red Usambara bird spider, but also chameleons, different colobus monkeys or rare butterflies and many tree species which can be found only there. The fertile mountain slopes are dotted with small villages and farms but for the most part they are covered with tropical forests.
