Overview

The Lemosho route offers the most captivating scenic trail on Kilimanjaro, with low crowds and a high summit success rate. Approaching from the western slope of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the route will take you to the world-famous Shira Plateau. Londorossi Gate is further away on the first morning you have to drive for about three hours to register at the Londorossi Gate and then drive a little further on to the start of the trek. It passes through majestic rainforest where some of the region’s most unique wildlife can often be seen. The route offers great acclimatization which is a very important consideration when choosing routes, hence longer programs are recommended over the shorter ones for better acclimatization.

Arrival Day

Either Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) the representative of Serengeti Camping Safari will pick you up and take you to your hotel in Arusha. You will meet our representative who will provide you with all the essential information before begin your safari the next day.

Departure Day

The driver will take you back to either Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) in time for your flight.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mkubwa Camp

In the morning a guide and a mountain support crew will arrive at the hotel in the morning in order to meet you and hold another briefing before heading to the Londorossi Gate, an approximate 2-3 hours’ drive. After registration at Kilimanjaro National Park, you will drive to a dense rainforest to the drop-off point where your trek begins. You will follow a moderately steep track, which leads you through an amazing and unspoiled natural forest to Mkubwa Camp. By the time you reach the camp, our professional mountain crew will prepare everything necessary, put tents and cook dinner for you. • Elevation: 2360 m to 2895 m • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours • Distance: 6 km | 4 miles • Habitat: Rain Forest

Day 2: Mkubwa Camp to Shira Camp 1

On this day trekking will starts on a small trail that passes through the rainforest. As you climb, the forest gradually thins out and the landscape changes into heath and moorland where plants like Erica and lobelia start to dominate the landscape. You will cross the Shira Ridge and after 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you will reach the Shira Camp 1. Here you will stop for a lunch, relax and enjoy the stunning views of Shira Plateau and Kibo Volcano. When you reach the camp our team of specialists will cook you lunch and have time to rest in your tent. • Elevation: 2895 m to 3505 m • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours • Distance: 8 km | 5 miles • Habitat: Health

Day 3: Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2

We explore the Shira Plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east on moorland meadows towards Shira 2 Camp. This trek is not difficult and you will be able to enjoy spectacular views of Africa and the unique flora of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding area. Shira 2 Camp is the best place on the trip to see Mount Meru, weather permitting. • Elevation: 3505 m to 3804m • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours • Distance: 11 km | 7 miles • Habitat: Moorland

Day 4: Shira Camp 2 to Lava Tower - Barranco Camp

After breakfast you will commence your journey, where you will have around 10km/6 miles to cover, climbing up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation then descend once more, down to Barranco Camp 3960 meters. You will see the famous Barranco Wall, impressive in both its massive size and steepness, you will have dinner and overnight stop. • Elevation: 3,804 m to 4,630 m - 3,960 m • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours • Distance: 10 km | 6 miles • Habitat: Moorland

Day 5: Baracco Camp to Karanga Camp

After an early breakfast you will encounter the hardest part of the stage as you have to scramble up the Great Barranco Wall. Then we climb the non-technical but steep, nearly 900 ft cliff. At the top of this climb, you will be rewarded with views of the Heim Glacier. You will then cross a series of hills and valleys until we descend sharply into Karanga Valley. One more steep climb up leads us to Karanga Camp. • Elevation: 3960 m to 4035 m • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours • Distance: 5 km | 3 miles • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

In the morning after breakfast, you will leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. Aiming to arrive at the Barafu Camp by 13.00 in the afternoon, when we will be rewarded with a cooked lunch. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are viewable from this position. Our team will set up a camp for you ahead of time, including tents and sleeping bags where you will relax and stretch your legs in preparation of the upcoming summit night. Dinner tonight will be served early, giving you time to get to bed early. • Elevation: 4035 m to 4640 m • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours • Distance: 4 km | 2 miles • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Very early in the morning (midnight), you will continue your climb to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek however, the most challenging part is the high altitude. At Stella Point (18,600 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (depends with the weather). For those who hike fast will see the sunrise from the summit. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. After a short break and taking photos, you will return to Barafu Camp just before midday where the rest of the crew will be waiting for you where you will rest for a couple of hours, take a brunch and then continue to descend to Mweka Camp where you will spend the night there. • Elevation: 4640 m to 5895 m - 3820 m • Hiking Time: 11-14 hours • Distance: 15 km | 9 miles • Habitat: Arctic

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, you will descent down to the Mweka Park Gate where the whole group will gather to congratulate you and you will get a chance to share your opinion of the hiking on the guest book and receive your summit certificates. From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. The driver will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel. • Elevation: 3820 m to 1650 m • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours • Distance: 12 km | 7 miles • Habitat: Rainforest
