Overview

The Machame route, also known as the “Whiskey” route, is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. This route offers a wide variety of views, landscapes and experiences. It offers breathtaking views and a rich variety of terrain throughout. It also offers an excellent acclimatization opportunity and as a result a very high success rate. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, beginning with a short drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. Each day on this route presents quite a distinct ecosystem to experience, which is one reason it is so popular. From the Machame Gate the root will lead you to the top of Kilimanjaro along the exciting footpath which starts at the tropical forest, then runs through all the climate zones and finishes with the Arctic desert on the summit area.

Arrival Day

Either Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) the representative of Serengeti Camping Safari will pick you up and take you to your hotel in Arusha. You will meet our representative who will provide you with all the essential information before begin your safari the next day.

Departure Day

The driver will take you back to either Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) in time for your flight.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

The guide and the rest of the crew will arrive in the morning at the hotel to pick you up ready for your journey to Moshi to the Machame Gate, a 2hrs drive. Upon arrival you will proceed with the registration formalities, before you start the trek. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. On the trek you might spot the black and white colobus monkeys watching you curiously as you walk past. Most of the time porters and cook happens to reach to the camping site before you for preparation of meals as well as setting of tents. In about 5 to 6 hours, you will reach the Machame Camp, sometime weather condition in the night temperatures can drop at Machame campsite. You will enjoy your evening meal and overnight stay. • Elevation: 1800m to 3010 m • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours • Distance: 11 km | 7 miles • Habitat: Rainforest

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Hut Campsite

After breakfast, you will leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, for the first time you will be able to see stunning views of the Shira Plateau laid out in front of you. The route now turns west onto a river gorge at 3,750m. The night at this bare camp will even be colder than the previous night, with temperatures dropping. When you reach the camp, you will have lunch, rest and spend the night at the campsite. • Elevation: 3010m to 3845m • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours • Distance: 5 km | 3 miles • Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Shira Hut Campsite to Lava Tower - Barranco Camp

In this new day your trek begins with an ascent above the Shira Plateau in the direction of the Lava Tower. The surrounding vegetation becomes more sporadic as the landscape changes to an alpine desert. It might be difficult, and you may feel some discomfort, but in order to successfully acclimate to the altitude you have to spend at least one hour, lunch will be served here before ascending the rocky scree path to Lava Tower (4,630m). • Elevation: 3845m to 4630 - 3960 m • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours • Distance: 11 km | 7 miles • Habitat: Moorland

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Today you will climb the “Barranco Wall”, where a steady hold will be needed. Hiking up the gorge wall is not difficult and only takes around an hour. Luckily a helping hand is never far behind and our guides will assist you wherever necessary. At the top of this climb, you will be rewarded with views of the Heim Glacier. From the top of the Barranco Wall you will cross a series of hills and valleys until you descend into Karanga Valley. Today’s walk is short meant for acclimatization. • Elevation: 3960 m to 4035 m • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours • Distance: 5 km | 3 miles • Habitat: Moorland

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

In the morning after breakfast, you will leave Karanga, you will continue up to the rocky section to Barafu Camp. Aiming to arrive at the Barafu Camp in the afternoon, when we will be rewarded with a delicious lunch. Our team will set up a camp for you ahead of time, including tents and sleeping bags where you will relax and stretch your legs in preparation of the upcoming summit night. Dinner tonight will be served early, giving you time to get to bed early. • Elevation: 4035 m to 4640 m • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours • Distance: 4 km | 2 miles • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp

Around mid-night after getting hot tea with light snacks, you will start your climb to Uhuru Peak. Ascending in the dark, with only a headlight to shine the way, you will climb the screes of Kibo, reaching Stella Point in about 5 to 6 hours. This 6-hour walks to Stella point are for many climbers, mentally and physically the most challenging on the route. At Stella Point (5,757m) you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see if the weather permits. From Stella Point you will encounter snow all the way to Uhuru Peak. Walking along the crater ridge you will finally reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). On the “Roof of Africa” you will enjoy a 360° view over the surrounding landscape before starting your descent along the same route. From the summit descend back to Barafu, where you will have a warm meal and relax. Then continue to Mweka hut campsite (3,820m). At Mweka camp you will have your last evening meal on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. • Elevation: 4640m to 5895m - 3820m • Hiking Time: 8-12 hours • Distance: 15 km | 9 miles • Habitat: Arctic

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate - Moshi

This will be the last day for the journey you will gently descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. After you descend, the whole group will gather to congratulate you and you will get a chance to share your opinion of the hiking on the guest book and certificate will be provided. Our driver will meet you at Mweka Village to drive you back to the hotel in Arusha. • Elevation: 3820m to 1640m • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours • Distance: 12 km | 7 miles • Habitat: Rainforest
