Overview

This special hiking tour takes you to Mount Meru is the first sight you can see when reaching Arusha town. The mountain is with its 4,566 m (14,990 feet) Tanzania’s second highest peak after Kilimanjaro and the fifth highest in Africa.

The mountain has two peaks: Meru Summit, the highest point, and Ash Cone, an additional peak inside the crater which was formed after a more recent volcanic activity. On clear days one can see Great Rift Valley and Kitumbeini and Gelai volcanoes in the western part, and in the east its neighbor Mount Kilimanjaro with Kibo and Shira Plateau. Many hikers use to hike Mount Meru before Kilimanjaro as it helps for the acclimatization.

Arrival Day

Either Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) the representative of Serengeti Camping Safari will pick you up and take you to your hotel in Arusha. You will meet our representative who will provide you with all the essential information before begin your safari the next day.

Departure Day

The driver will take you back to either Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) in time for your flight.

Day 1: Miriakamba Hut

In the morning after breakfast the driver will pick you up at the hotel and drive you to Arusha National Park, once at Momella Gate you will then proceed with the registration and depart for the trek. The trek takes you through places from where you can catch breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the renowned Momella lakes. You are likely to encounter wildlife like Bushbucks, ElephantsCape Buffaloes, Giraffes, and Warthogs on this day, you will be escorted by an armed ranger hired through TANAPA. As you continue hiking, you will pass the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall at the base of Mount Meru. Upon arriving to Miriakamba Hut (2500m), your chef will prepare a hot dinner and washing water for you. Enjoy the beautiful sunset and overnight. • Elevation: 1500m to 2500m • Distance: 10 km • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours • Habitat: Montane Forest

Day 2: Saddle Hut

After breakfast, you will start ascending up the steep trail along the ridge of the saddle. You may see various wildlife along the way. The trail has views of Mount Meru Crater and the Ash Tray. When you arrive at camp, you have the option of hiking Little Mount Meru (3820m) with your guide for a spectacular view of the area around Mount Meru and further acclimate. Dinner will be served early for you to have an ample rest before your midnight summit. • Elevation: 2500m to 3570m • Distance: 8km • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours • Habitat: Forest and Moorland

Day 3: Saddle Hut – Summit Attempt – Miriakamba Hut

Your guide will wake you at 00:30 for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt at 1:30am. The trail starts off on a steep grade to Rhino Point (3800m) to Cobra Point (4350m). The last hour of the hike you will scramble on a rocky ridge between the crater and inner cliffs of Meru. You will reach the summit of Meru (4565m) at sunrise with spectacular views of Mt. Meru Ash Tray and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Enjoy the views then descend to Saddle Hut for a short break. You will then continue descending to Miriakamba Hut (2514m) for dinner and overnight. • Elevation: 3500m to 4565m down to 2514m • Distance: 5km up 13km down • Hiking Time: 12-14 hours • Habitat: Alpine Desert Moorland and Montane Forest

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut

After a long deserving rest, breakfast will be served then you will begin your final descent to Momella gate. You will hike through forest and meadows where it is likely to spot wildlife. Our driver will be at the Momella Gate to pick you up and drive you back to your hotel in Arusha. • Elevation: 2514m to 1500m • Distance: 10km • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
