TRAVEL ADVISORY NO. 10 OF 16TH MARCH, 2022 RELEASED BY THE UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) through the Ministry responsible for Health (mainland) continues to enhance prevailing preventive measures against the spread of COVID-19 including those related to international travel. In view of this, the Government is updating the Travel Advisory No. 9 of 24th December 2021 to version No. 10, effective from 17th March, 2022 to accommodate measures as follows:

1. All travelers including Tanzanians, returning residents and members of the crew1 /layovers are required to truthfully fill in an online Traveler’s Health Surveillance Form available at https://afyamsafiri.moh.go.tz/ for Tanzania mainland.

2. Travelers entering URT including Tanzanians, returning residents and those in transit through land borders who are;

a. Fully vaccinated, will be exempted from both RT PCR and Rapid Antigen Test requirements. Travelers will be required to present a valid vaccination certificate with QR code for verification upon arrival. The only accepted vaccines are those which have been approved by the URT and the World Health Organization.

b. Not fully vaccinated, unvaccinated and those not eligible for vaccination due to their country policy will be required to present a negative COVID-19 RT- PCR or NAATs certificate with QR code obtained within 72 hours before departure. If travelers originate from countries listed at www.moh.go.tz or Points of Entry will be tested for COVID 19 upon arrival using a Rapid Antigen Test at their own cost of 10 USD (TZS 23,000) for Tanzania Mainland. If found positive they will be tested with RT- PCR for confirmation, allowed to self-isolate and the results will be sent via email or any other means.

c. Not fully vaccinated/unvaccinated and have no negative COVID 19 RT- PCR certificate will be dealt as follows;

i. In case of air transport and International marine vessels will be tested for COVID19 using RT PCR test at their own cost of 100 USD for Tanzania Mainland. Results will be sent to them while self-isolated.

ii. In case of International regional and inland vessels will be tested by Rapid Antigen Test at their own cost of 10 USD while positive will be further confirmed by RT- PCR at a cost of 50 USD for Tanzania Mainland.

iii. In case of ground crossing, will be tested by Rapid Antigen Test at their own cost of 10 USD and if found positive will be handled according to Bilateral and Joint 1 means persons on board a conveyance who are not passengers (source IHR, 2005 3rd Edition) 2 Border agreements.

d. Children aged 5 years and below will be exempted from both RT PCR and Rapid Antigen Tests requirements

3. Travelers to URT who are eligible for Rapid Antigen Test as in section 2b above are advised to pay online to avoid unnecessary queue upon arrival through an automatically generated control number obtained after filling the online Traveler’s Health Surveillance Form. For those to Tanzania Mainland pay through https://afyamsafiri.moh.go.tz. The symptomatic positive Rapid Antigen travelers will be isolated for treatment at designated health facilities as per National COVID-19 Treatment Guideline.

4. Travelers in transit by air transport are exempted from both vaccination and COVID 19 testing requirements unless stated otherwise by the conveyance to be used or countries of their final destinations.

5. All departing travelers are advised to seek information prior to departure from the travel agent regarding COVID-19 requirements of their country of destination or conveyance to be used.

What are the requirements for Visa in Tanzania?

To enter Tanzanian territory as a foreigner you must have visa, the price is 100 USD per person for US citizens and 50 USD per person for other countries. You can get visa on arrival however the process has been a bit slow so we recommend getting it online via the link below;

Will I see the Big 5?

There is a good chance of seeing the Big 5, this depends on which package you have chosen and the parks you will visit as part of your itinerary. For instance, you have 2 days and you want to see the Big 5, we recommend that you visit Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater (if your goal is to see a black rhino). We cannot guarantee you that you will see the Big 5 because there’s no guarantee with wildlife, but you are in safe hands; our guides work hard to make sure that they will find the big 5 and so much more.

How much does a Safari cost?

The cost for a safari in Tanzania varies widely depending on several factors; the days one will want to spend, the number of people, the type of the safari, the time of the year you wish to visit and the activities included in the safari. Whether you’re looking for something romantic or even something a little more adventurous, it’s entirely up to you. Our team is here to help you organize your safari according to your preference.

What is the best way to avoid tsetse flies?

Tsetse flies are present in woodland areas of Tarangire and in certain parts of Serengeti. They are most active during daylight hours. You can help to avoid these biting flies by choosing to wear neutral-colored clothing (khali, beige, green, olive, light brown) as the flies are attracted to bright colors. Most people suffer no adverse reactions to the bites of these flies, but a few suffer from itchiness and swelling.

FAQS for Hiking Kilimanjaro

When is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?

Climbing Kilimanjaro can be done all year round, the best months are from June to August it is cold season but there is visibility. In September and October, the temperature rises, during this time of the year there is often mist in the middle altitudes hence the summit’s peak is in the clouds. For a perfect visibility in the morning and evening with short rains and thunderstorm November and December are the months. January to February are the warmest and driest months with almost no clouds in the morning. As for the end of March, April and May, rainy season begins.

How fit should I be?

There are no technical mountaineering skills require but general fitness is necessary because you will enjoy more and increase your summit success rates. We do recommend to start some physical training before trekking, which may include hiking to familiarize your body with rigors of the trek and aerobic training.

Which route should I take?

There are 7 main routes to Kilimanjaro, one of which starts on the Northern side of the mountain and the rest on the Southern side. The routes are Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, Northern Circuit and Umbwe. 75% of the climbers choose the Marangu Route for either 5 days or 6 days climb. We recommend 7 days Machame Route, 8 days Lemosho Route and 9 days Northern Circuit Route for a successful rates and incredible views and landscapes.

What is altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness, is a negative health effect of high altitude. If you climb higher, the number of oxygen molecules per breath reduces. That makes your body difficult to adapt and function as normal with less oxygen. You might get some of the symptoms of altitude sickness above 3,000m but if you follow the guidelines given by our guide, you will not experience severe symptoms of the altitude sickness and won’t affect your climb.
