Further North at the lowest point of the Rift Valley sist a beautiful scenic area below the shallow soda lake, Lake Natron. It is a dry and desolated area inhabited by Maasai people. Untouched, distant, mysterious, this Lake is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world and special shelter to millions of tiny crustaceans, attracting literally thousands of Lesser flamingos. Natron is also the only known breeding ground for millions and millions of lesser flamingos.
In addition to seeing these amazing birds, you can hike to the beautiful waterfalls in the area, or for those wanting a little more adventure, try hiking the active volcano of Ol Doinyo Lengai” means “The Mountain of God” in the Maasai language. Rising brilliantly from the Great Rift Valley floor to a height of 2890m above sea level, Ol Doinyo Lengai Tanzania’s only officially certified active volcano, and the only active volcano on a planet that emits carbonatite magma or cold lava. The mountain can be climbed in 6 hours, affording breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley and volcanic formations in the Ngorongoro highlands as you get to the summit.
