Overview

Visit two of southern circuit’s spectacular parks in Tanzania, Mikumi National Park and Udzungwa Mountains. The Mikumi is bordered to the south with the Selous Game Reserve, the two areas forming a unique ecosystem while Udzungwa Mountains is found on the central part of Tanzania between Iringa and Morogoro regions within eastern arc mountains. A 3 days safari to Mikumi, and Udzungwa will give you a taste of it all.

Arrival Day

Either Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) the representative of Serengeti Camping Safari will pick you up and take you to your hotel in Dar es Salaam. You will meet our representative who will provide you with all the essential information before begin your safari the next day.

Departure Day

The driver will take you back to Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in time for your flight.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Mikumi National Park

Early in the morning after breakfast the driver will pick you up at the hotel in Dar es Salaam and begin your journey. An early start is advisable to avoid the morning traffic. Once you leave Dar es Salaam behind, the drive gradually follows the Tan-Zam-Highway and soon the lesser-known Uluguru Mountains will appear as a splendid backdrop while you continue to Mikumi. Landscapes of Mikumi provides a serene wildlife experience, commonly seen animals Elephant, Giraffe, Zebra, Antelope, Wildebeest, Eland, Crocodile, Hippo, Baboon. If luck is in your favor, you won’t miss to see Lions and Ultimately the Leopard. Mikumi inhabits over 300 species of birds namely saddle bill stork, hammer kop, malachite kingfisher, lilac breasted roller, yellow throated long claw, battler eagle etc. The highway cuts directly through the national park and sometimes wildlife can be seen along the road. After a long day you will arrive at your lodge/camp for the night and spend the afternoon at your leisure.

Day 2: Mikumi National Park

Today you will explore Mikumi National Park for a full day game drive. The Mkata flood-plain in the heart of Mikumi is the park’s main feature. With its open grassland it provides the perfect opportunity to easily spot large mammals such as buffaloes, elands, elephants, giraffes, hippos, reed-bucks and warthogs. Predators, including spotted hyenas, leopards and lions, can also be seen. The mixture of savanna and mountain ranges offers an incredible backdrop – especially when the sun sets and everything is lit in golden hues. After the game drive, and exit the park heading to your lodge/camp.

Day 3: Mikumi Region to Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Early in the morning after breakfast you will leave your accommodation and begin your safari towards the Udzungwa mountains for a day of hiking at Sonje. Upon arrival you will meet our guide/rangers who will accompany you on the hiking tour. This is a short 3km easy trail to the bottom of the Sonje waterfall, with the option of continuing up a steeper path for 15 mins to reach the second falls. These falls are very beautiful and a favorite of waterfall lovers. From the second waterfall, you can continue around the circuit to return to the start along a different path. After the hiking day, you will exit the park and head to your lodge/camp.

Day 4: Udzungwa National Park

The most popular trail in Udzungwa is Sanje Waterfall. This 180m waterfall is very impressive, surrounded by rainforest with excellent views over the Kilombero floodplain. At the top, you can swim in the refreshing plunge pool of the top waterfall (around 40m high) surrounded by thick rainforest. You can opt to take a 20min detour from the path, either on the way up, or on the way down the path from the Old Sanje Hotel, to the bottom of the large waterfall for fantastic views looking up, and more swimming/diving in the pool (a bit warmer). It is common to see both type of Colobus on this trail. Many people walk up and down on the Old Sanje Hotel trail, but there is an alternative route up or down starting at the ranger post to the south. This route is slightly longer and is less used, so provides better chances of seeing undisturbed monkeys, and of course a circular walk.

Day 5: Udzungwa Region to Dar es Salaam

Early in the morning after breakfast you will begin your journey back to Dar es salaam, the journey will include an exciting game drive to give you another chance to see any of the wildlife you might have missed on the first day. You will arrive in the evening at your hotel intime for dinner.
