7 Days: Kilimanjaro Hiking via Rongai Route
Overview
The Rongai Route is the only route that starts from the Northern slope of Mt. Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. Because of its remote location, it’s one of the least crowded of the seven Kilimanjaro routes and for most of the trek you are walking through virgin wilderness and awe-inspiring scenery. It is a preferred route for those looking for an alternative because it is the only route that passes by Mawenzi. It’s a decent route choice for those looking to climb during the rainy season, as the north side of the mountain generally receives a little less precipitation. Rongai is a moderately difficult route, and is highly recommended, especially for those with less backpacking experience. The descent is made through the Marangu route; thus, you will be able to see both sides of the mountain.
